The Substantial Character of the Korean Elegies

Abstract
|
|
|
The present study aims to analyse 80 pieces of Korean elegies handed down in the literature and classify their characteristics and examine the views of life, afterlife, religion and filial duty.
The anther found that general characteristics of those elegies is songs of common people and found out what they thought and how they interpreted their future in the faceof deat The result obtained in this study is as follows.
1. 29 pieces that sing of transcient life and time.
2. 15 pieces that sing of fear and despair that life will never return and after life is a place of hopelessness.
3. 8 pieces that sing of after-life which is the beginning of a new life and eternal rest.
4. 9 pieces that sing of moral principles, neighbourly behaviour and tenderness, and sadness of eternal farewell
5. 5 pieces that sing of Buddism that will lead them to paradise after their death. ¡á6. 14 pieces that sing only gibberish for encouraging labourious bier-carriers.
